Fired up with Korean Fever

Korean pop music, popularly referred to as K-Pop, heated up the air waves as Wonder Girls, 2ne1, and Super Junior boomed into popularity in RP. The three Korean groups are among the top ten in the recent MYX Hit Chart. The fame of K-Pop is clear; famous regardless of age, gender, and whether the Filipinos understand the lyrics or not.

The foreign music craze shot out from the music videos that spread through the Internet. Because of video streaming sites, newly released songs and videos can be shard to all parts of the world in a matter of seconds after uploading. These videos do not follow an already known trend. Rather, created from a wide array of imagination, humor, and appealing dance moves.

Three groups, millions of fans

New evolution of the 21st Century, contracted as 2ne1, debuted with two versions of their hit single”Fire” on May this year. The song has been playing over the radio and television for some tine now.

Contributing to the popularity of the group in RP is Dara, known as Sandara Park to Filipinos. An alumna of Star Circle Quest, Sandara went back to Korea in 2007 and has maintained her popularity among Filipinos as a member of 2ne1. The group consists of four female members: Dara, CL, Minzy, and Bom. 2ne1 released their first mini-album last July and Youtube videos of “I Don’t Care” already got hundreds of thousands of views.

Wonder Girls got people singing and dancing to the tunes of “Nobody” as the five member girl group became popular in RP. The song’s music video has humorous twist, viewers laugh while enjoying the girl’s dance. Capturing viewers with the song’s catchy tunes and dance moves, the group’s fans base grew. Wonder Girls recently released an English version of “Nobody”. Wonder Girls debuted in 2007 with their song “Irony”. Most popular among their songs are “Tell Me”, “So Hot” and” Nobody”.

Super Juniors, known among fans of SJ or SuJu, captures Filipinos’ attention with “Sorry, Sorry” which is also the title of their third and most recent album. With their 13 members dancing to the song “Sorry, Sorry” climbed up to the Philippine charts without sweat. Aside from singing, the members have also acted on the lineup of dramas and movies. “Attack on the Pin-up Boys” is an example, humorous movie about shooting.
